Interview with Lord Necron of
Thornspawn

THORNSPAWN are a brutal black metal band hailing form San Antonio, Tx. Their demo, Consecration of Evil Flesh, is a barbaric display of hatred and pain. THORNSPAWN have not succumbed to the temptations of playing "goth" black metal with pro photo shoots and autograph signings. These warriors are true to the underground and will always remain so!! If you like your black metal fast and furious, combining shear hatred with chaos, then THORNSPAWN is for you!!

Interviewed by Pazuzu.

Pazuzu: Darkest greetings, Lord Necron. I must tell you that the Consecration of Evil Flesh demo is quite impressive, in a barbaric and chaotic way. Can you give a brief history of the band and its line-up?

Lord Necron: We formed in '95 officially. The core of the band being me on guitar, Swornghoul on Guitar, and Blackthorn drums/vocals. We have had members come and go but we always remain. We have now recruited Born Haga, who used to play in Necrovore years ago. He will handle bass.

P: Who would you consider to be your main influences?

L: Possessed, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Incantation, old Slayer, Bathory, old Emperor and Saytricon, Marduk, old Morbid Angel, Profanitica, Necrovore...

Thornspawn
Well, they certainly won't be winning any beauty pageants...

P: Would you agree that the people who can influence you the most are quite often the people you play with on a regular basis?

L: Yeah we do rub off on each other. Swornghoul may play something and I'll be be blown away from it. And I'll do something that might have the same effect on him.

P: Describe your sound to the readers who havent heard THORNSPAWN yet.

L: The early 90's late 80's sound that was once considered black metal is what we sound like. Pure hate and aggression played with blashemious intentions!

P: Do THORNSPAWN have a web-site?

L: Yeah.

P: What is the URL and what can be found there?

L: http://members.tripod.com/~thornspawn. Yeah, we need to update it, but it does have a history and general info.

P: Do you believe in the whole Alien phenomena?

L: Yes I do believe in other lifeforms.

Thornspawn P: Do THORNSPAWN have any other demos out?

L: One before that is no longer available called The Dacian Empire from '96. We only released it locally.

P: THORNSPAWN's sound is very brutal and chaotic for a black metal band, not filled with tons of synth and melody, nor do you adorn your image with vampirism or a gothic flavor. Are you a fan of any of those types of "black metal" bands?

L: I like some other black metal. Not just raw stuff.

P: How do you feel about the whole "church burnings" incident that occurred in Norway?

L: Well that was their thing. I think for some involved it was a grand statement, and for others a quick way to fame.

P: Has being from San Antonio been a hinderance of any sorts due to your love of such an extreme genre of music?

L: Well I don't know. I think being from Texas our music is more pure than say a band from New York where all they are concerned about is groove and sounding street. I know all not all bands are that way, but most Metal from there is subhuman influenced. I use the term subhuman as a state of mind of people not their skin color

P: Is there much of a scene in the San Antonio area and are you able to play live much?

L: Well there is a small scene of about 70 people that are into it. We play live about every 4 months or so around here.

P: Who have you played with and who are some of your favorite local bands?

Thornspawn L: I am not into any bands from around San Antonio. I heard of some bands but I never actually heard them so I can't say if I like them not. Most local bands want to be Korn or Machine Head.

P: Are you a fan of mostly black metal?

L: Yeah but i do like other stuff too like Arcana, Soil Bleeds Black, Valefor, and old school Death Metal and Heavy Metal.

P: What types of non-metal metal music do you enjoy?

L: Classical, ambient, TV show themes... just kidding about that last one!

P: Is there some significance to the name THORNSPAWN?

L: Haha! I will only say Drink from the Thornspawn chalice!!!!

P: The cover of the Consecration of Evil Flesh demo is obviously a wood-carving by Gustave Dore. Are you an avid fan of his work and what were some of the other choices for the cover?

L: Yes I am fan of his works. Pieces like Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno are incredible. Especially since it was all done on wood cutting. We did have different artwork on the first 50 of the tapes made. It was done by a friend of ours called Necrogoat.

P: Are you a fan of pornography at all?

L: Yes. Don't let me wife see this!

Thornspawn P: Any favorite stars?

L: Rebecca Wild, Lisa Lipps, and Wendy Whoppers are fine ladies!

P: Black Metal just went through an enormous surge of popularity in the underground. As with Death Metal and Thrash and numerous other genres that have experienced sudden growth spurts, Black Metal is beginning to thin out and the bandwagon jumpers are beginning to stray by the wayside. What bands do you think will persevere through the "flushing out" of the scene?

L: Bands like Marduk, Dark Funeral, Setherial, and Keep Of Kallisen will survive because they have the true spirit of black metal in them. The US scene has not really taken off but we are going to be a major force in the near future I think. Bands like Judas Iscariot, BloodStorm, Absu, and Sarcophagus keep releasing material that is getting better and better. But back to your question, the bands that are trend will die and the bands that are sincere will survive. It is really a quite simple theory.

P: Many have accused bands such as Emperor of "selling out" by accepting their relative commercial success and signing with a larger label on the grounds that the very nature of Black Metal is to resist popular acceptance and constantly struggle against the mainstream. What is your stance on this? In the unlikely event that the elements of barbaric Black Metal become mainstream (that is, popular among the general metal-buying population), where do you envision extreme music going from there? Can it get any more extreme, in your opinion?

L: Well I do think it can get more extreme because music always does. Remember when Kill 'Em All was considered the heaviest album ever? Yes, I do think even our style might get more popular but not on the level of Cradle of Filth or anything. But we will always try to keep our integrity. But we are not really concerned about commercial success.

P: What do you think is the definitive Black Metal album? That is, if someone asked you "what is black metal" and you could only play one album as an example, what would it be?

L: Under the Sign of the Black Mark by Bathory. It is the real foundation of modern black metal. Satanic lyrics, blazing speed, screechy vocals, and brutality.

P: Describe a live THORNSPAWN performance.

L: Loud! Leather and spikes, war paint, smoke... and the band playing with aggession and hate! No time for puffy shirts and looking somber.

P: Are there actual personas behind the names you have taken in THORNSPAWN?

L: Good question. Swornghoul is sworn to the black. Blackthorn is a black thorn in the skull of Christ. I am the Lord of the Dead.

P: What is the primary message you hope to convey through THORNSPAWN?

L: That real black metal is alive and well!

P: Do THORNSPAWN engage in any rituals to "prepare" for live rehearsals/performances?

Thornspawn L: No not really, our rehearsals and performances are our ritual.

P: Is it true that one night during a full moon blood orgy, Swornghoul accidently spilled too much virgin blood out of the mighty THORNSPAWN chalice onto the pentagram, and as a result, your semen got mixed up with the blood creating a creature named Giggazzinduinddi Bonsheesatwrathra unto an unsuspecting world?

L: No comment.

P: Thats all the questions I have for you. Best of luck with THORNSPAWN. Any last comments you would like to make?

L: Thanks for the interest. And American black metal fans need to start supporting American bands! Stop blowing your money on second rate European bands that are poping now. Bands like Blood Stained Dusk, Perveseraph, Krieg, Noctuary, Judas Iscariot and Abazagorath are just as good as European acts. Do not be fool and pass up on these bands because they are American. In Blasphemy!!
