What kind of practice regiment did you undertake to develop the incredible speed with which
REBAELLIUN plays?
We have been playing Death Metal since 1991/1992, so this is one of the points which helps us out to play fast music, we know very well our instruments and what we can do with them. In the very
beginning we used to play Slayer coversongs as well, and this is a good exercise for everyone who wants to play fast. And nowadays we are more focused in developing a good technique in the
instruments, to be able to play not only Death Metal, but any kind of music we like. I mean, when you really master the instrument, you go a lot further as musician. We will always focus our efforts in REBAELLIUN
and the Death Metal genre, but to be able to play really fast you have to develop some skills that most of the Death Metal musicians are not used to use in this genre.
Brazilian bands seem to be steeped in the fires of ultra-fast Death Metal, with yourselves, Krisiun, Abhorrence and others. To the best of your knowledge, which band was the forerunner?
Krisiun is for sure the main responsible for this new Brazilian scene, I have no doubt about that. We know them since 1991, we had another Death Metal band called Blessed at
that time and we also played fast, but Krisiun was really faster, they are the fastest band all over the world... we were playing more in the Morbid Angel style, but also fast.
Then we quit this band in 1996 and in 1998, when we formed REBAELLIUN, we came faster than before, this was pretty natural for us. All the other bands came later, but
most of the Brazilian Death Metal bands nowadays know each other.
How long did the recording process for "Annihilation" take?
It took 3 weeks to record and mix "Annihilation", we worked at Stage One Studio, in Germany, and Andy Classen was the producer. We recorded our parts pretty fast, and so we had
more time to pay attention on all the details while mixing the album.
Are you completely satisfied with the final product?
Yes, we are. "Annihilation" sounds powerful, heavy and clear, what we wanted for this album. You can hear all the instruments, you can feel the music very powerful when
listening to this CD, I mean we got the right sound for the music we played in "Annihilation".
If there was one thing about the recording that you would change, what would it be, if anything?
In this recording I would not like to change anything. However the next album shall sound a bit different, after recording "Annihilation" we have searched for a clearer
sound on the rehearsals and on the new songs, so the next album will probably sound a bit clearer, tighter and heavier.
“It’s not funny, their asses are on fire.”
Would you fuck a midget?
No.
What are your three all-time favorite Death Metal albums?
Morbid Angel - "Altars of Madness," Morbid Angel - "Covenant" and Deicide "Legion.”
Is there any album in your collection that you are somewhat embarrassed that you own and love?
I don't think so.
What one band would you say REBAELLIUN sounds the LEAST like?
Any band which doesn't play extreme Metal. You can find Heavy Metal elements in Slayer music for example, but not in our music, although we all listen to bands such as Manowar, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden...
When was the last time you
cried during a movie?
If it happened one day, it was during my childhood, I really cannot remember.
Speaking of movies, everyone in America loves Forrest Gump. What do you think of it?
I just watched Forrest Gump once, but I really enjoyed it, a cool movie in my viewpoint.
Do you think his girlfriend, Jenny, was a slut?
Not that much...
Were you into the late '80s Thrash scene in Brazil, with bands like Sepultura, Sarcofago, Vulcano, Mutilator and Sex Trash?
Yes, I began to listen to Metal around '89, and I recorded several Brazilian underground releases in tapes, 'cause I had no money to buy the LP's. Sepultura of course was the best
Brazilian band for me, but I remember I liked also Sextrash and Sarcofago, specially the album "Rotting".
What do they think of Sepultura or Soulfly now?
It's not my cup of tea. Anyway Sepultura was a great band one day, I still enjoy a lot their music till "Arise".
You've done a fair amount of touring. What country/location had the craziest fans?
I think that countries in the East Europe are great places to play, like Poland or Belarus. We played last year in these countries for more than 1000 people each show, and they
really make a lot of noise in Death Metal concerts...
What was the best show in your experience so far and why?
The last shows we have played in Brazil have been great, the last European tour also had some great shows...
How about the worst?
I could not choose the best one or the worst one, in general all the shows are good.
Are there many groupies in Death Metal?
Not too many. There are more girls involved with the Death Metal scene now than 10 years ago, but most of them have boyfriends playing in bands and stuff like that. We've never played in the U.S. , but we've
heard about those girls showing their tits during the shows over there, is it true?
It sometimes happens, but it normally takes some goading as well as a lot of alcohol. Believe it or not, a girl recently showed her tits at an Anal Cunt show I was at, of all places. She was a real pig though.
Anyway, are you able to make a living from your music?
We make some money with REBAELLIUN, ‘specially with the shows, but it's not enough to pay all the bills, 'cause we are still 'building' a strucuture for REBAELLIUN, and besides this
we are 4 guys that need money to survive.
What is it you do to pay the bills, then?
We don't have regular jobs 'cause it would be impossible to keep a job playing in REBAELLIUN and touring 3, 4 months a year, so when we are not touring we give music lessons to
make some money, we work in recording studios, anything which can give us some money and the chance to learn more about music and everything linked to music.
What do they feel about some of the more moshy Death Metal bands of today like Skinless, Dying Fetus, etc.?
I don't like this kind of music, I personally prefer bands like Morbid Angel, Krisiun or Centurian. They have good musicians, they play fast and sound brutal, but it's not the
feeling I'm used to, you just cannot compare any of these bands to Morbid Angel for example...
I understand your line-up changed with the new album. Why did Marcello Marzari (seen at left)
leave the band and how did you come to acquire the services of Lohy Fabiano?
Marcello left REBAELLIUN last year to dedicate himself to tattoos, he's nowadays a tattoo artist and he has his own studio, so he's probably very busy with this and it would be impossible to dedicate to REBAELLIUN at
the same time, so he chose to leave the band. Lohy Fabiano had already played with us before REBAELLIUN, in another band, he's a friend of mine since I was 6 years old,
and when he knew that Marcello had left the band he called us and we decided to rehearse a few times with him to check how it would sound. It sounded OK, and even better when he recorded his parts in the studio.
How does Lohy's sound/performance differ from Marcello?
The first big difference is that Lohy is a good and dedicated musician, Marcello was more focused on the vocals when he was in REBAELLIUN. And Lohy sings deeper and more
powerful than Marcello, he can sing very low but still sounding clear, and he can sing really high as well, giving different dynamics in our music.
How does "Annihilation" differ from "Burn the Promised Land", in your opinion?
It's more mature in every sense. We developed a lot as musicians since "Burn the Promised Land", so you'll easily notice that REBAELLIUN is much tighter and clearer than
before, but even more extreme and chaotic than before. The structure of all songs is also better, so you can follow better what we are playing, 'cause the changes of tempo make
sense in the whole conception of each song. We consider "Annihilation" is in a higher level if you compare to "Burn the Promised Land".
Where do you see REBAELLIUN three records from now?
I'm sure that REBAELLIUN will be bigger than nowadays, we will have a bigger structure for tours and better promotion all over the world. I'm not able to see the future, however we
have worked a lot to achieve our goals, "Annihilation" is just our second album and we already reached good popularity in the Death Metal scene, we will keep working hard like this on
coming years to grow more and more, to build a solid career and to be able to play better and faster...
