Necrophagia. The name is legendary and for good reason... they were doing the gore and death thing back when the Dukes of Hazzard was still on at prime time. I am sure you've read a thousand intros and histories of the band by now, so I will spare your eyes and let you go directly into the deranged mind of the man known as Killjoy.Interviewed by Al Kikuras.
Al Kikuras: What is your all-time favorite horror movie?Killjoy: The Beyond. And most of Fulci's movies. Also, Charlie's Family has to be seen to be believed!
A: What made you decide to put the band back together? Are you on a mission from God?
K: It is is something that has been needed to be done for a long time. It is a mission from Fulci, he is god.
A: What led to the original breakup?
K: It broke up because when it was time to do the next record they came with a sound of Scorpions meet Metal Church. I would have no part of that.
A: Are you still in contact with any of the original members?
K: I do not have any contact with the ex members. I did not even consider asking them to rejoin the band.
A: Was there interest from other labels besides Red Stream?
K: Yes, but we chose Red Stream. It was an easy choice. They are a growing label and really into the band. Their dedication and enthusiasm can not be matched by any others. The packaging and promotion on the record are exactaly what we were looking for. It is clear that we have made the right choice.
A: Had you considered resurrecting Necrophagia before you actually went ahead and did so?
K: Yes, I considered many times reforming the band but it was a matter of finding the right people.
A: Did you stay in tune to the underground during your absence at all?
K: I did not really stay in touch with the underground all that often but rather watched alot of horror movies.
A: Any plans to re-release Compelled By Fear? (the Killjoy solo album).
K: No plans to re-release that album.
A: I understand you had recorded another solo album, but it was never released. Why?
K: By the time the second album was recorded I decided that it was something I did not want to do any longer. It was total thrash stuff and I just needed to let the gore flow instead.
A: Were the members of the "new" Necrophagia friends or did you first contact them as possible Necrophagia members?
K: They were friends first. I've known them for a long time. This line-up amazes me... Wayne is a fucking mad man on the drums... he's the most intense drummer I've ever seen. He doesn't rely on double bass or blast beats, he just beats the fuck out of the drums. So with him and Dustin on bass it can only get heavier! We'll do another album after Holocusto.... Don't know when, but there will be another. Our guitarist Anton Crowley is always writing, always!! He is a master of the macbre riff...
A: Anton Crowley (left) is Phil Anselmo, isn't he?
K: No comment.
A: Are you a Pantera fan?
K: Not really.
A: The vocals on Holocausto De La Morte completely bury the vocals on Season of the Dead. You moved away from the almost "spoken word" style you used back in '88. Did the solo albums also stick to that basic style, or was there a progression towards what your voice sounds like today?
K: The solo vocals were more of a singing style along the lines of Testament or Exodus. Nothing like what I do now.
A: Did you actually re- think your approach to vocals for Holocausto... or did you just pic up the mic and that horrible, revolting sound was what came out?
K: No, it was nothing I thought about. It is just the way that it came out. I always want to make things sicker and more vile.
A: Will the material on your upcoming MCD, Black Blood Vomitorium, be all original?
K: It will be all original except we are considering putting on a track by Mercyful Fate called "Devil Eyes" that we originaly recorded for a Fate tribute out of Poland. Itnclude a sequel track called "It Lives In The Woods" inspired by Evil Dead. "And You Will Live In Terror" is a song based upon The Beyond. Fulci is god !!!!!
A: How does it compare to the material on Holocausto De La Morte?
K: It is very much along the lines of Holocausto, and it will be released late this year.
A: I understand you have plans to release more archived Necrophagia material. What will be included on the disc?
K: We will archive tracks from our bootlegged album, three demos, and rehearsal material. The release date is still pending.
A: You have a project planned with members of Mayhem and Darkthrone. Please tell us about it. How would you categorize the music?
K: It's called Eibon. The music will be unholy black metal.
A: Will you be handling the vocals or playing an instrument?
K: Maniac and I will both be doing vocals.
A: Do you play any instruments?
K: I can play a little bit of everything.
A: Descrive a live Necrophagia performance to me. Any plans to incorporate gore or horror into the stage show?
K: We are going to have screens in the background at our gigs. It will have gore clips. We will have corpses hanging from meat hooks. Wayne will blow fire. I will be spitting black blood vomit. Many other things are planned as well.
A: What music do you listen to outside of metal and horror soundtracks?
K: Hardcore. Misfits, Black Flag and Battalion of Saints, for example.
A: What is your opinion of Impetigo? It would seem Necrophagia and those sick fuckers would be kindred spirits. Were you a fan of them at all? K: I love Impetigo!
A: How about Broken Hope?
K: I have never heard Broken Hope.
A: Tell us about your upcoming home video.
K: This video will have to be seen to be believed. It will be directed by the new maestro in gore, Jim Van Bebber. It will be gore drenched, sick and vile and it will have several different themes running throughout it. One of which centers around a nun being impregnated with the Devil's child. Corpses, flesh eating zombies... and that's only the beginning!
A: Has Jim Van Bebber ever asked you to appear in a film? If I may say so, you have a definite homicidal maniac look about you and it would carry over to the screen, I am sure.
K: Jim hasn't started any new projects as he is finishing up Charlie's Family. I would love to work on something with him in the future besides our video. Wayne and I would jump at the chance to be in one of his movies.
A: Are there any modern horror films that you think are good? I thought Event Horizon was pretty sick!
K: I've never seen Event Horizon. I like Dark Waters, Cemetary Man, some of Argento's newer work. The uncut version of Dust Devil is great.
A: What is your opinion of Troma? Have you seen Redneck Zombies?
K: Yeah, I've seen it. It's okay, but not one of my favorites. They released some really good stuff but alot of stupid shit too.
A: Are you into shockumentaires/real death videos at all?
K: Not a whole lot.
A: When was the last time you saw something in a horror movie that shocked you?
K: Today, I saw the corpse from Mortuary... it came out with a knife in the pool area and I was totaly startled. The last thing that really shocked me was the scene from Anthropophogius where the cannibal rips a fetus out of a pregnant woman and eats it.
A: How did you first come into contact with Euronymous?
K: Euonymous first contacted me about getting some Necrophagia demos. Our friendship just grew from there over the years.
A: Considering your friendship with Maniac, I would assume you are a fan of the new Mayhem as well. As I am sure you are aware, there is a large faction in the underground that is opposed to Hellhammer continuing to use the Mayhem moniker. The feel that, without Euronymous, there can be no Mayhem. Do you think there is any validity to their beliefs?
K: Maniac is also a great friend of mine. I think the new Mayhem, is true! I love the De Mysteriis album but Maniac's are so much better than Attila's. Euronymous was a big part of Mayhem but so are Maniac and Necrobutcher. Hail Mayhem!
A: Besides Fulci, what other classic horror directors do you feel are the true masters of the genre?
K: Mario Bavo, Dario Argento, George Romero, Bob Clarke, Umberto Lenzi, and some others.
A: Do you prefer Fulci's Zombie or The Gates of Hell?
K: I prefer Gates of Hell. How can you beat a priest hanging, flying maggots, gut puking, eye bleeding, and zombies in one movie? Of course, I prefer The Beyond over both of those. Only Fulci could top himself with Gates of Hell.
A: I have always found the final scene of The Gates of Hell to be rather confusing... what is your take on it?
K: A lot of Fulci's movies are like that. I think each person has their own interpretation. I like to keep my interpretation to myself and let each person come up with their own ideas on this.
A: Is your wife a horror fan?
K: My wife loves horror.
A: If you have a son, are you going to name him "Lucio?"
K: Fulci is god... we shall see.
A: I'd bet my balls that you would pick horror over movies any day. Am I going to be singing soprano?
K: Horror comes first and foremost. I live for that.
A: Do you have more CDs or horror movies?
K: Horror movies by far.
A: Have you seen any snuff films?
K: No.
A: I've seen the pics of her in a Necrophagia shirt, and seeing how we are a porn and music site, I have to ask.. where and how did you meet Jenna Jameson?
K: I met her in a club a few years ago. We hit it off right away. She's a great person.
A: Are you a big porn fan? Any favorite movies or stars?
K: I like the Jenna stuff also very much into Papillion. Taylor Hayes is cool.
A: When was the last time you shit your pants?
K: Don't know about this shitting stuff but I spit black blood vomit all the time.
A: What is the absolutely most disturbing thing you have seen in your life?
K: I've seen so much stuff it is hard to say what is the most disturbing. I think when it is finnished our video may be the answer to this question.
A: Have you written much material for a new release?
K: The new album is coming along great... very heavy, sick and horrifying. This is pure undead horror and sickness. I have a song called "The Silent Domain" which is probably going to be the sickest thing we've ever done. "Returning Corpse Blood To Fire" is a new track written by Wayne. Fulci is god!!
