Old Shit

An interview with GURGE of
Lord Gore

One of the most entertaining and insane gore grind bands currently lopping off heads, Razorback Records recording artists LORD GORE are poised to release their second platter of splatter, Resickened. Al Kikuras chewed the gristle with guitarist/vocalist GURGE.

Al: So, why the title Resickened for the new album instead of the original idea, Dead In The Flesh?

GURGE: Dead in the Flesh was the title for a completely different cover art concept that didn't quite turn out, We're still using a lot of that artwork, but we've chosen to have Waita Uziga do another cover for us. So far it looks amazing, much sicker than the first, but classy, yeah... real classy.

You have to put the cover of The Hate Tank (M.O.D.) on the album. You have no choice.

Heh heh, you never know. We're doing three splits so it may certainly pop up on one of those.

Now that you guys are releasing your second album on Razorback, obviously having negotiated a much more lucrative deal for the second album, what are you going to do with all the fucking money?

We're going to Dollywood, Twitty City and that Frankie Avalon house. I hear there's a shitload of fine chicks over there.

Are you guys friends with GHOUL? Is it really the members of Enuff Z'nuff (without the makeup) under the hoods?

Well, I don't want to perpetuate rumors, but yes. Digestor is actually Chip Z'nuff. The others are Kevin Dubrow, Jaynie Lane and Steve Grimmett of Grim Reaper. That's what we in the biz call a fucking supergroup my friend.

That’s either fake blood or strawberry yogurt. Either way, gross!

Ever cry during a movie? What movie and what part?

Aw, crap. I admit, I cry like a Japanese porno schoolgirl when I'm watching sad movies at home, but I cry tough. In the theater I'm a fucking badass, in fact I spit on this guy who was crying at The Last Samurai, no joke.

Did you ever have to take a shit so bad on stage you had to go take care of business before the set is over?

Haven't had that happen yet. Maybe on an upcoming tour we'll all shit our pants during the encore or something. We need a new gimmick. Everyone's puking, eating worms or whatever. We'll be the guys who shit ourselves.

Obviously, you guys are big fans of the classic death metal bands (IMPETIGO, AUTOPSY, etc.) but are there any new death metal bands that send you flying?

Hmmm... nothing really new. The last impaled was amazing, Bloodbath, Haemorrhage, Intestine Baalism and Anata are good. I'm not too stoked on the uber-technical shit coming out lately.

What is the worst album you have ever heard in your life?

Anything by Dave Matthews or that godawful fucking Modest Mouse. All that new crap on Headbanger's Ball lately is horrid too. Hot topic nu mall metal must die.

I read that The Autophagous Orgy was recorded in your home studio. Did you have the album recorded before you had a deal with Razorback?

Naw, we recorded it after we signed to Razorback. We had all that material written, but hadn't recorded it except in demo form.

Was the new album recorded in your home studio as well?

Yup. We're fucking DIY, we cant deal with any of these big studio guy attitudes, we need full artistic freedom and control... plus were broke as a joke. Thankfully the Haggard Bros. helped us finance the recording also. We couldn't have done it without Buster, Sharkey and Spivey.

How does it smell in there?

Hmm... mix beef stew, halls cough drops and cat piss, throw in a pinch of ass essence and you're on the right track.

Is there any album in your collection that you are somewhat embarrassed that you own and love?

Cripes! I guess maybe Journey, or The Cure. I haven't jammed either in forever, but haven't gotten rid of them either.

On the topic, without stopping to think about it, what are your 5 all-time favorite albums?

Rigor Mortis - Rigor Mortis
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Devil Doll - Dies Irae
Hypnosia - Extreme Hatred

Forbidden! What do you think of Twisted Into Form?

I love Twisted Into Form. Not quite as world-shattering as Forbidden Evil, which is one of the top 5 lead albums ever in my opinion, but it rules nonetheless. I remember when you could pay 3 bucks and request the "Step By Step" video! I think New Kids on the Block had a song of the same name at the same time.

Are you as disappointed as I was with the lame-ass vocals on Green (Forbidden’s third album)?

Yeah, I wasn't too stoked on Green.

What one band would you say Lord Gore sounds the LEAST like?

The Buggles?

You added some new members since The Autophagous Orgy. What happened to the original guys and where'd you dig up the new blood?

Well, we parted ways with Nekro and Redrum due to personal differences, but they were both great guys. For whatever reason it just wasn't working out with that lineup, so we recruited Colon Bowel on drums and Maniac Neil on guitar and I think this lineup is way more comfortable and stable. We had Bob from Bung playing Bass for quite a while and on tour, but he lived too far away and had an obligation to his main band Bung. He may play bass for us live again though.

Is that Maniac Neil of Frightmare?

The very same, also of Maniac Killer.

Is he still doing Frightmare or has he abandoned it for the greener pastures of Lord Gore?

I think there will be more Frightmare in the future for sure, probably next year.

The obligatory question: how does the new album compare to the first? Any major differences in sound or theme?

Everyone who has heard the new stuff and ourselves think that its light years beyond the last record. There are many faster songs, many more flavors of doom/death/grind/gore, but the new material still retains the old catchiness and gore-soaked sickness of the first. It's just on steroids this time. The subject matter has a decidedly more sci-gore theme dealing with animal and insect mutation, recycling humans ala Soylent Green, and also sees the return to zombies with "Trioxin" and the forgotten flesh with "Son of Forgotten Flesh."  I think a lot of people will be surprised. The sound and what we were able to do has improved greatly because we had better equipment this time around as well. There's even some "Foley Gore" in there. Heh heh.

Any chance LORD GORE might tour in support of Resickened?

That's definitely the plan. We had a blast on our mini tour this year and want to do a full tour after the release. East Coast/West Coast would rule. Ultimately I would love to play in Europe and Japan, then I could die happy. Our next show will be the CD release show in December with Engorged and other bands to be announced.

If you could tour with any three bands, who would they be? Any band, whether still together or not.

Yikes! Uh, well this is a tad unrealistic, but first album-era Rigor Mortis, Mental Funeral-era Autopsy and Dictius Te Necare-era Bethlehem.

And now, what three bands that you might actually be able to tour with?

Impaled, Exhumed, Macabre? Ha ha, I wish!

I assume you guys all have day jobs. Who's is the crappiest and what is it?

I guess mine because I have to deal with pissy real estate agents who don't know what the fuck they want, and I have to save my own taxes to pay every year. I do graphic design for a real estate magazine. The other guys seem a little more content with their jobs.
